Deborah Romeyn

Deborah Romeyn is one of Manitoba’s songwriting treasures. Her well known work Nothing Like the Freedom, has become a Prairie theme song, and has taken her love and prairie vision to International audiences.

Born in Regina and raised in Fort Qu’Appelle, her family eventually settled in Winnipeg. Sandy Hook and the Manitoba Interlake are home to Deborah now with her longtime partner and her black lab.

Music has always been a part of Deborah’s life. She composes her work on piano and guitar. Her other life work includes teaching and massage therapy. Her interest in palliative care and Mental Health education, and advocacy for the 2SLGBTQ+ community combine to make Deborah’s music rich and multi-layered.

Since 1987, Deborah has released 6 full length recording projects as well as composing music for Cancer Care and providing tracks to the National Film Board of Canada. She will easily create songs for any occasion or individual who requests one.

A veteran performer, Deborah’s humor shines through regardless of audience size. She is as comfortable on Folk Festival stages as she is in larger venues. She is well known to Manitoba audiences and has sold out multiple venues in Winnipeg and the Interlake. Whether she is at The Winnipeg Folk Festival, The Back Forty in Morden Manitoba, The Thompson Folk Festival, or The Ship and Plough in Gimli, she pleases all sorts of audiences. Deborah’s recent performances have taken her to long term care residences to the delight of residents and staff. A warm and engaging performer, her stories, humour, music and audience interaction make for a unique concert experience.

Deborah’s early exposure to Women’s music shaped and inspired her music career. Songwriters and performers such as Connie Kaldor, Heather Bishop, Ferron, Karen Howe, Chris Williamson, and others shaped much of Deborah’s work. Her music has been a medium to address political issues in a way that inspires deeper thought and engagement to create change.

Deborah’s current work keeps her deep affection for prairie life running through new musical styles as well as the typical Folk that listeners associate with Deborah’s music. Her newest project, We Are Made of Stars will be released in the fall of 2024. Featuring some of the best musicians and singers that Manitoba can offer, as well as a few surprises, this project highlights Deborah’s songwriting versatility. We are made of stars indeed.
